Hollywood tough guy Jon Voight is to put his past behind him to play the late pope John Paul II in an American television film, the entertainment industry press said Friday.

The Oscar-winner is to replace British actor Ian Holm in the CBS television miniseries "John Paul II" after Holm was forced to pull out of the project citing personal reasons, Daily Variety said.

Voight will play John Paul II from his election to the papacy to his death in April, while actor Cary Elwes is cast as the younger Polish priest Karol Wojtyla.
Also starring in the film are James Cromwell, Ben Gazzara, Franco Nero and Charles Danceas.

Production on the four-hour miniseries began this week in Krakow, Poland, and shooting will shift to Rome later this year.

Voight , 66, won a best actor Oscar for 1978's Vietnam War film "Coming Home" and was also nominated for the 1969 classic "Midnight Cowboy" and won a best supporting actor nod for 2001's boxing biopic "Ali."

He is also the estranged father of Hollywood star Ange lina Jolie, the star of the "Lara Croft" movies and Brad Pitt's reputed paramour.
