This week there were a series of three very interesting news about minorities in this nation, and how where they live has a noticeable impact in local and national politics.
On the one hand, the US Census Bureau said Thursday that whites are now a minority group in the state of Texas , according to a July 2004 population estimate which placed the number of non-Hispanic whites in the nation's second-most-populous state at 11.2 million, or 49.7 percent of the population.
With this, Texas joins Hawaii , New Mexico , California and the District of Columbia as a “majority-minority” state. Did I say District of Columbia ?
Well, that may still be true, but probably not for too long. The same Census Bureau reported that the District, Arlington and Alexandria have grown whiter this decade, in contrast to the increasing diversity of the region's outer counties.
The reason is simple: housing prices and a highly qualified job market push minorities out, and change the racial and ethnic dynamics of the area.
Indeed, minorities are migrating to the suburbs, because the urban landscape are unaffordable, and affluent whites are moving in to the inner city areas they wouldn't dare cross a few years back.
This wouldn't be a major issue except for the fact that it does have an impact on the racial politics, and the public perception of what is right. The gentrification process has pushed African American out of the houses they have owned for years because at times the taxes are higher than their annual salary.
In fact, the numbers show that minority groups, contrary to the trend in the entire country, experienced a slower growth or a decline in DC, Arlington and Virginia .
We also know that something similar is happening in Silver Spring , Maryland, where housing prices have skyrocketed with the sprung of its Downtown, and those low-rent apartments close to the Metro are becoming a rarity. Indeed, living close to the Metro, to avoid the eternity of the commute, is now a pricey luxury for young and trendy executives.
Obviously, one could argue, the fact that those demanding people are coming to the city may do something for DC public schools, which could use a lot of improvement, and minorities would benefit from that. Well, yeah, in theory, except that, if you read a couple of paragraphs ago, minorities will not be there anymore when the real improvements finally sink in.
That's the saddest part. African American communities held DC together, with plusses and minus, and worked to build it up, and, in an ironic remembrance of the times of the slavery, now they built all the wealth, but inherit none.
The last news was that the most conservative cities in the country are white.
This comes from the Bay Area Center for Voting Research in Berkeley , California , whose study uncovered that the political and cultural divide in the nation reflects a racial divide. It seems that the most conservatives US cities have mainly white populations, while the most liberal have large African American communities.
The researchers said that the implications of the study were disheartening because it sheds light on a clear divide in interests, and therefore in political views along racial lines.
When one puts together the three pieces of information it becomes clear that pretending to ignore the status of race and ethnicity in today's America , to favor the ideal of meritocracy and market, is not just a mistake, but a profound historical injustice. |
