US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday urged a united front with Peru to fight terrorism and drug trafficking as he wrapped up a flying visit to this South American state.

Rumsfeld issued the call in a joint press conference with embattled Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo.
Rumsfeld "congratulated" Toledo for what he said was a leading role the Peruvian has taken in combatting terrorism and drug trafficking.

Toledo in turn thanked the United States for supporting the efforts and urged Washington to rush approval of a free trade agreement with Peru .
The US defense chief arrived in Peru Wednesday afternoon from Paraguay .

His one day visit to Peru comes on the heels of political crisis. Toledo , whose popularity ratings have plunged to eight percent, according to polls, named a new cabinet Tuesday after his prime minister abruptly resigned.
Rumsfeld, who also met with Peru 's defense minister Marciano Rengifo here, was flying back to Washington Thursday afternoon.
