There was happiness over the Mary's Center in Washington DC this Tuesday when they learned they were among the recipients of the second annual NCLR-Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Awards (FSA).

Five National Council of La Raza (NCLR) affiliates will receive their awards at the National Affiliate Luncheon on Saturday, July 16 during the NCLR Annual Conference July 16-19 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

"The five FSA winners exemplify the outstanding, committed, and essential work of NCLR's network of community-based affiliate organizations," stated NCLR President Janet Murguia. "Working on the front lines every day, these dynamic groups are visibly impacting the communities they serve, and NCLR is thrilled to present these awards and celebrate their successes."

This year's winners are being recognized for making a measurable impact on the lives of Hispanic families through programs that meet the education, housing, employment, health, and advocacy needs of their local communities:

Chicanos Por La Causa-Tucson - Its Youth Programs Department focuses on helping youth develop their mind, body, spirit, and community.

•  El Centro, Inc. - Its Home Ownership Center provides low-income Latino families with homeownership counseling services and other financial solutions to homeownership and home maintenance.

•  Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care - Healthy Families DC is an intensive home visitation program that links overburdened families at risk for child neglect and abuse to outside services such as housing, domestic violence, and mental health support, and educates parents on child development, child safety, prenatal care, and other family-planning matters.

•  Parent Institute for Quality Education - The Nine-Week Parent Involvement Program teaches parents how to improve and develop their children's academic environment at home and at school.

•  Texas Migrant Council - Its Migrant/Seasonal Head Start Family Literacy Program focuses on improving the conditions of low-income families and migrant and seasonal farmworkers by providing health care, day care, child and adult education, and employment services. Each FSA winner will receive a $10,000 grant.
