Several jury members who will in September award the prestigious Asturias Prize for sport are proposing a joint award to footballing legends Alfredo di Stefano, Pele, Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer, an Asturias Foundation source told AFP on Monday.

The posposal has received sufficient support to become an official candidature for the prize, which Spanish film director Jose Luis Garci is to present on September 8, the source said, adding the idea was to recognize "the contribution to the history of football" by the five greats.

Spain 's Crown Prince Felipe is the patron of the Asturias foundation which annually hands out eight awards -- each worth 50,000 euros (61,000 dollars).
The awards are made in the fields of communication and humanities, scientific and technical research, social science, arts, letters, international cooperation, international understanding and sport.
